University of the Rockies Provost Presents at APSCU 2013 Annual Convention and Expo
Dr. Tina Parscal appeared on "Women Leading in Proprietary Education" panel

Dr. Tina Parscal, provost of University of the Rockies, presented at the Association of Private Sector Colleges and Universities (APSCU) 2013 Annual Convention and Expo, held June 5-7 at the Rosen Shingle Creek Hotel in Orlando, Fla. Alongside several other notable women in higher education, she spoke on a panel of presenters during one of the conference sessions titled “Women Leading in Proprietary Education.”

“As women executive leaders in the proprietary sector, the panel offered a unique perspective of leadership. Women may offer what Carol Gilligan refers to as a ‘different voice’ to the discourse about leadership,” said Dr. Parscal.

The session focused on the successes and challenges that female leaders may face in a leadership role. The presentation included techniques that the presenters have used as tools to remove barriers and how women can challenge and mentor female colleagues to raise their professional goals and to enhance leadership opportunities. Other presenters included Vickie Schray of Bridgepoint Education, Dr. Connie Johnson of Colorado Technical University, Dr. Trenda Boyum-Breen of Rasmussen College, Diana Auer Jones of Career Education Corporation, and Sally Stroup of APSCU.

“Each panelist shared her unique experiences and challenges as a woman leading proprietary sector colleges and universities and offered strategies for emerging leaders in all sectors of education including building networks and coalitions, finding work-life balance, developing one’s own authentic leadership style, the value of mentoring, and cultivating thought leadership,” added Dr. Parscal.

More than 2,500 individuals attended APSCU’s three-day convention, themed “Opportunity for All.” The goal of the event is to provide an opportunity for higher education and workforce leaders to address regulatory issues, establish and discuss best practices, and train professionals at all levels from the higher education industry.
