University of the Rockies President Contributes Article to The Detroit News
Dr. Charlita Shelton pens piece on methods to help students compete in college

University of the Rockies president and chief executive officer Dr. Charlita Shelton wrote an article titled “College Completion Matters, Too” that ran in today’s edition of The Detroit News. In the article, Dr. Shelton offers insight into some of the hurdles first-generation students and members of historically under-represented groups – such as African-Americans, Hispanics, and low-income students – face during their college years.

Throughout her career in higher education, Dr. Shelton has conducted research on the obstacles to education that certain groups encounter. She has also observed strategies that reduce or remove those obstacles. “Here’s what works: outreach and preparation before they begin college; monitoring their academic progress; offering tutoring, counseling and mentoring; and providing special academic support, such as writing activities and study skills development,” wrote Dr. Shelton in her article. “Considering these students’ busy and burdened lives, some of these supports can be offered not only in classrooms at specified times but also online at the students’ convenience.”
