University of the Rockies Staff, Faculty, and Students Participate in Heroes Day Volunteer Activities
Heroes Day on April 25 celebrated National Volunteer Month

April is National Volunteer Month and University of the Rockies celebrated the occasion with a volunteer event called Heroes Day on Saturday, April 25. Staff, faculty, and students from University of the Rockies teamed up with representatives from the University’s parent company, Bridgepoint Education, and Ashford University to take part in volunteer efforts held simultaneously in Denver, San Diego, and Clinton, Iowa. Hundreds of volunteers showed up to support Heroes Day activities in the three locations.

In Denver, employees at University of the Rockies, Bridgepoint Education, and Ashford University joined students from the two universities in an event to improve Smith Elementary School. Improvement projects completed by the volunteers included organizing the school’s reading room, cleaning the black top, and preparing a garden for planting. The improvements will provide the children who attend the school with a more comfortable learning environment.

In San Diego, Bridgepoint and Ashford employees volunteered at the Jacobs & Cushman San Diego Food Bank to prepare 1,390 food boxes for hungry senior citizens and 3,946 backpacks filled with food for children who are at risk of hunger. In Clinton, Iowa, Ashford employees and students came together to remove trash from Mill Creek Parkway.

Held bi-annually, past Heroes Day events have focused on service projects such as refurbishing the Mi Casa Resource Center in Denver, revitalizing the Mary Fay Pendleton School on Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton in San Diego, and many other activities to improve local communities.
