West meets East as faculty, students and alumni from University of the Rockies embark on China for a two-week journey to share their knowledge with peers on the Western ways of thinking in psychology.

The educational adventure, taking place March 27 through April 14, includes a lecture in existential psychology by Dr. Louis Hoffman, core faculty member and editor-in-chief of University of the Rockies press. Dr. James Ungvarsky, a leading lecturer of the university, will speak about the influence of Western research history and methods. 

Seven students from Colorado and New Mexico will also present at universities across Hong Kong, Shanghai and Nanjing. The students are Elizabeth Saxon, Trent Claypool, Jason Dias, Kate McGuire from Colorado Springs, Colo.; Natalie Williamson from Albuquerque, N.M.; and Cheryl Deloia from Tijares, N.M.

“Overcoming language barriers is at the forefront of international communications. Fortunately, two of our students who know and have studied Mandarin will serve as translators,” said Hoffman. 

“The faculty and students have spent months studying and preparing for these lectures and we are excited to share our knowledge with our Eastern counterparts. The collaborative approach among continents presents a forum for tremendous opportunity in the study of human behavior. China is rich in both beauty and knowledge and will provide us with a better understanding of this region so we can embrace it in our studies.”

University of the Rockies is the only university dedicated solely to the graduate teaching of psychology in the Colorado Springs area. It offers master’s and doctorate degrees.

As part of the trip, the faculty and students will arrive in Chengdu, the site of last year’s earthquake. “While we look forward to all the destinations, Chengdu is special. We’ll share our work in a part of the country that is rebuilding itself after a catastrophic earthquake. What we are teaching is the art of healing.” 

This is the third annual University of the Rockies trip to China.
