Rockies Counseling Center (RCC) is offering a number of free and low-cost group therapy opportunities beginning January 2012. “The group therapy process provides great benefits for participants,” explains Miriam Scott, a pre-doctoral intern at RCC. “Over time, the closeness of the group enables members to take greater emotional risks in a safe and supportive environment. These encounters teach participants how to communicate and resolve difficulties with other people in their lives.” RCC is a community counseling center operated on-site at University of the Rockies. The center serves individuals, children and families in the Pikes Peak region with a range of high-quality, low-cost therapy services. Group therapy opportunities now include: · Chronic Pain Group. In this group, participants will learn new methods to cope with pain and reduce stress, and will also receive group support. Beginning January 19, this group meets on Thursdays from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. The cost is $5 per session and $10 for the workbook. · Love and Logic Parenting Skills. This parenting program teaches parents to set limits and to avoid power struggles with their children. This program also includes a children’s group designed to prepare and empower kids and reinforce a positive parent-child relationship. This group meets Wednesday evenings from 5:00 – 6:30 p.m. It runs for nine weeks beginning January 4. It requires pre-registration and a $25 fee for class materials. A sliding scale may be in place for individuals in need of financial assistance. · DBT Skills Group. This group teaches Dialectic Behavioral Therapy to help participants control strong emotions and cope with life events through acceptance. This therapy focuses on living with balance and seeing possibilities rather than focusing on pain, limitations and problems. The DBT Skills Group meets at two times: Mondays from 3:00 – 4:30 p.m. and Thursday afternoons from 5:00 – 6:30 p.m., beginning January 9. This group is free and open to the public. It runs for 16 weeks and requires pre-registration. · S.M.A.R.T. Recovery. This is an alternative to 12-step recovery groups. It uses science and reason to help people overcome and recover from addiction and habits. This group meets Monday evenings from 6:00 – 7:30 p.m. and is free to attend. · Men’s Support Group. This group provides education and support for men as they discover and solidify their modern identity. Beginning January 3, this group meets from 5:30 – 7:00 p.m. on Tuesdays and costs $5 per session. · Connections. This is a 12-week program designed to help participants recognize shame as a universal experience and to embrace authentic living as a foundation for shame resilience. Beginning January 25, it meets on Wednesdays from 5:00 – 7:30 p.m. There is a one-time fee of $20 to cover materials. For more information or to register for a group, call 719.442.0606.
