Can a mobile learning application foster student engagement? 

According to University of the Rockies’ Provost, Dr. Tina Parscal, the answer is “yes.”

In fact, University of the Rockies has been measuring student engagement with a mobile-learning tool, and will share the early results at the annual conference of the Western Interstate Commission for Higher Education Cooperative for Educational Technologies (WCET). The presentation will occur in San Antonio, Tex., on Nov. 1.

“We’re thrilled to present this mobile learning engagement model to our colleagues and fellow educators,” said Parscal, who will co-present with colleagues Dana LaFleur and Ken Sherman. “We have been confident in the effectiveness of Rockies Mobile since its genesis, and our analysis has taken great strides to confirm that.” 

“When we introduced the Rockies Mobile application, we took a hard look at its capacity to serve students, and realized there wasn’t a standing scientific model for doing so,” said Parscal. “By integrating popular assessment models such as the Community of Inquiry Model (CoI) and the Framework for the Rational Analysis of Mobile Education (FRAME), University of the Rockies has been able to assess the influence of mobile technology on student engagement.”

At WCET, the team will share original empirical findings related to mobile usage, user behaviors and preferences, as well as student engagement and associated literature gaps.
