Ceremony of pomp and circumstance marks transition from student to graduate
On Sunday, October 27, University of the Rockies conferred 491 master’s and doctoral degrees at the Colorado Convention Center in downtown Denver. Graduates and their families traveled from around the country to participate in the ceremony and related events. The graduates were addressed by Colonel (Retired) Martha McSally, who shared stories of her own trials and triumphs in the ultimate pursuit of success. Many graduates were presented with awards and scholarships, including Genette Irsik, who was granted the Josephine Lyle Cowan and E. Garland Cowan, Sr., Memorial Scholarship. The award is given annually to a student who intends to provide professional service to people in religious organizations. Genette Irsik was awarded the James R. Gregg Memorial Scholarship, given in honor of an alumnus of the Colorado School of Professional Psychology. Nicki Hohl earned the President’s Diversity Scholarship, given on behalf of Dr. Charlita Shelton, president and CEO of University of the Rockies. Duane Buchanan received the Excellence in Organizational Development and Leadership Scholarship, and Joseph Gioia was awarded the Distinguished Doctoral Dissertation Scholarship. Additional scholarships received by the university on behalf of students were the Excellence in Psychology Scholarship, earned by James Bernthal; the President Alumni Scholarship, earned by Michaela Turner; the Diversity Scholarship, earned by Shirley Davenport; and the Frank Rice, Jr. Memorial Scholarship, earned by Sherrie Burney.
