University of the Rockies faculty member Dr. Ethel Vesper was invited to present a paper to the Indigenous Knowledge and Sustainable Development panel at the joint meeting of the International Union of Anthropological and Ethnological Sciences (IUAES) and the Japanese Society of Cultural Anthropology (JASCA). Dr. Vesper’s presentation took place on May 16, 2014, in Chiba City, Japan.

Dr. Vesper’s paper, “The Survival of Cultural Traditions in Micronesia,” focused on land management on Guam and Bikini Atoll and explored the question of who is responsible for saving the cultural traditions of these island cultures. “My paper questioned the roles professionals in the fields of government, cultural anthropology, and sociology play in preserving the cultural traditions of indigenous cultures,” said Dr. Vesper. She has served for two years as a member of the Commission on Indigenous Knowledge and Sustainable Development which seeks to resolve urgent problems that impact future generations.
