As an acknowledged expert in the practice of sports psychology, Dr. Tim Rice was recently asked to bring his expertise to the other side of the Atlantic as an advisor to Ireland’s national championship boys basketball team. Dr. Rice, who is a member of the core faculty at University of the Rockies, was invited to work with St. Mary’s College, an all-boys Catholic school in Galway, Ireland. Back in January, the basketball team from St. Mary’s won their first ever All-Ireland Championship. With Dr. Rice’s assistance, the team is hoping to repeat their success in the upcoming season.

Using both sport-specific skill development and sport and performance psychology practices, Dr. Rice worked with the team for five weeks. He was invited to St. Mary’s College by Ciaran Murphy, who serves as the principal and head basketball coach at the school. Dr. Rice earned his doctorate in sports management from the U.S. Sports Academy and teaches in the School of Professional Psychology at University of the Rockies.

In addition to his work with St. Mary’s, Dr. Rice has helped other teams as well. While in Ireland, he worked with St. Patrick’s Boys Primary School and the Titans Basketball Club as a coaching and development consultant.

“It has been the dream of a lifetime to coach the game I love overseas. Hopefully, I have brought value in working with the players and coaches here in this country,” said Dr. Rice during the trip to Ireland. “Ciaran gave me my first team to coach 24 years ago in a summer camp in New York, so working with him again was an incredible blessing. I hope this experience can be something my University of the Rockies students can use as an example of the power of networking. I feel so blessed to have had an opportunity like this.”
