Dr. Allen Cornelius contributes his resesarch on student-athlete career development
University of the Rockies faculty member Dr. Allen Cornelius was a contributing author to a presentation featured at the 2016 NCAA Convention in San Antonio, Texas, earlier this year. Dr. Cornelius wrote the presentation, titled “Student-Athlete Career Development,” with researchers from Springfield College and Monmouth University. It discussed a project focused on enhancing the career skills needed by athletes after their sports careers are over. The presentation was based on a pilot program for college student-athletes funded by the NCAA Innovations in Research and Practice Grant Program. “College student-athletes develop a variety of transferable skills through their experience in sport, and often they do not realize how valuable these skills may be in choosing and excelling at a career,” said Dr. Cornelius. “Our team developed and evaluated workshops to assist student-athletes in realizing how their experiences as athletes prepared them for careers outside sports.” The final report and presentation slides can be accessed at: http://www.ncaa.org/about/resources/research/student-athlete-career-development.
