“WHIPLASH: A Child Abuse Prosecutor’s View on Life and Crime” will be held at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 3 at University of the Rockies (555 East Pikes Peak Ave). The free seminar will be led by Jeffrey A. Dort, deputy district attorney for San Diego and an internationally recognized expert on preventing and prosecuting crimes against children. Dort will focus on the “vicarious traumatization” that occurs when professionals are required to view acts of abuse in order to protect children, and how exposure to such abuse impacts their ability to maintain mental health. Dort recently completed Supporting Heroes in Foundational Mental Health Training (SHIFT), and will also share information on how individuals can learn to recognize and cope with problems before they become severe or permanent. This topic will be of particular interest to prosecutors, judges, law enforcement and therapists. Because space is limited, RSVPs are encouraged. Registration may be completed by phone at 719.442.0505.
