University of the Rockies honored four students for their commitment to community service and diversity by awarding the first President’s Diversity Scholarship.

Tiko Hardy, Kathleen Newell, Kiara Pittman and Zoe Mills are the first students to be presented with this scholarship, which will be awarded annually. 

“Diversity is one of the four core values of University of the Rockies, and it is an important part of every student’s learning experience,” said Dr. Charlita Shelton, president of University of the Rockies. “We are proud of our students’ service in the Colorado Springs community, and we are pleased to be helping them reach their educational goals.”

• Tiko Hardy is a first-generation student working toward her doctorate degree in psychology with a specialization in criminology and justice studies. She has done extensive volunteer work within urban communities and the criminal justice system. 

• Kathleen Newell is a full-time student working toward her doctorate degree in clinical psychology. She has chaired the annual Colorado Springs Street Breakfast for six years, and was the first woman to lead the annual fundraiser that feeds 5,000 people and raises money for military charities.
   
• Kiara Pittman is a full-time student working toward her master’s degree in psychology with a specialization in mental health counseling. She volunteers at Fort Carson and also works with autistic children as a behavior therapist.

• Zoe Mills is a full-time student working toward her doctorate degree in clinical psychology with a specialization in clinical neuropsychology. She works with a diverse population of military service members and their families at the Warrior Support Center.

As scholarship recipients, doctoral students will receive a $1,260 per term tuition credit and master’s students will receive a $960 per term tuition credit.
