Rockies Counseling Center (RCC) now offers four opportunities for group therapy, ranging from parenting skills to addiction recovery. RCC is a community counseling center operated on-site at University of the Rockies. The center serves individuals, children and families in the Pikes Peak region with a range of high-quality, low-cost therapy services. “The group process provides great benefits,” explains Andrew Van Dyke, a pre-doctoral intern at RCC. “Through interaction with other people, participants learn to communicate more effectively. They are also given a platform to present and resolve difficulties with people in their lives, such as co-workers, neighbors, friends or relatives.” Four groups are currently offered at RCC, three of which are free to join. · Grief and Loss Group is designed to support individuals who are dealing with life transitions. Those may include losing a loved one, a career change, moving or divorce. This group meets Saturday afternoons from 1:00 – 3:00 p.m. and is free and open to the public. · S.M.A.R.T. Recovery is an alternative to 12-step recovery groups. It uses science and reason to help people overcome and recover from addiction and habits. This group meets Monday evenings from 6:00 – 7:30 p.m. and is free and open to the public. · DBT Skills Group teaches Dialectic Behavioral Therapy to help participants control strong emotions and cope with life events through acceptance. This therapy focuses on living with balance and seeing possibilities rather than focusing on pain, limitations and problems. This group meets Thursday afternoons from 4:00 – 5:30 p.m. and is free and open to the public. It runs for 16 weeks and requires pre-registration. · Love and Logic is a parenting program that teaches parents to set limits and to avoid power struggles with their children. This program also includes a children’s group designed to prepare and empower kids and reinforce a positive parent-child relationship. This group meets Saturday afternoons from 12:00 – 1:30 p.m. It runs for nine weeks and requires pre-registration and a $35 fee for class materials. A sliding scale may be in place for individuals in need of financial assistance. For more information or to register for a group, call Rockies Counseling Center at 719.442.0606.
