In response to the Jake Snakeburg Youth Concussion Act recently passed by the Colorado State Legislature, University of the Rockies faculty members have prepared free concussion recognition training for youth athletic coaches. The free course will be offered at University of the Rockies’ campus (555 East Pikes Peak Avenue.) on two dates this fall: · Thursday, October 27 from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. · Saturday, November 5 from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. The course includes a comprehensive review of the new legislation, on-field assessments that can be done, issues related to evaluations, and an opportunity to discuss how this will be implemented with other coaches. The curriculum has been approved by the Brain Injury Association, and will satisfy Colorado’s requirement for coach education. Annual concussion recognition training is now required of middle school through high school coaches in the state of Colorado. Student athletes who suffer from a head injury must also earn medical clearance before returning to practice, play or competition. Clearance may be provided by licensed psychologists with training in neuropsychology. To register for one of the scheduled trainings or to request a custom training for your organization, contact Dr. David Stephens at 866-442-0505, ext. 1607.
