Rockies Counseling Center to Offer Group Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)

Rockies Counseling Center (RCC) will begin offering group sessions of Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) in January 2012.

DBT is one of the most effective methods of treatment among individuals with borderline personality disorders. It is also useful among patients who suffer from mood disorders, self-injury and chemical dependency.

DBT typically consists of two components: a personal plan developed with a therapist to manage events that occur; and group sessions that focus on skill development in the areas of mindfulness, interpersonal effectiveness, emotion regulation and distress tolerance.

“The goal of DBT is to become more effective,” explained Miriam Scott, a pre-doctoral intern at RCC who is co-leading the group. “We all strive to find a life worth living. DBT is a way to help people find and achieve that in their daily lives.”

In a small group setting, participants will learn skills to help them improve upon relationships, deal with strong emotions, and manage small and large stresses.

The group will meet weekly beginning Monday, January 9. The 90-minute sessions will begin at 3:00 p.m. at Rockies Counseling Center (555 East Pikes Peak Avenue).

For current RCC clients, there is no cost to join the group. The public is welcome to attend for $5 per person per session. Registration is suggested. Call 719.442.0606 to register or for more information.
