University of the Rockies' Christina Jaquez Featured at 2011 International Conference for Academic Integrity

Christina Jaquez, academic resolution administrator for University of the Rockies, presented at the 2011 International Conference for Academic Integrity in Toronto, Canada on Saturday, October 15.

Jaquez presented “Avoiding Plagiarism Before Punishment,” a collaborative discussion on how to help students to proactively identify and avoid plagiarism. The presentation was based on Jaquez’s experience at University of the Rockies, specifically with managing a writing center and coaching service.

“At University of the Rockies, we offer writing coaching services and plagiarism detection software to both our online and campus-based students,” she said. “Our writing center coaches focus heavily on plagiarism education as well. As a graduate institution, many of our students are returning to academia after an extended absence from school. These students benefit from additional education about proper citation and about what constitutes plagiarism in general. Through our writing center, students can use the coaching they receive to help them avoid academic integrity violations, while not fearing punishment.”

The Center for Academic Integrity is affiliated with the Robert J. Rutland Institute for Ethics at Clemson University. Membership is international, and includes over 100 U.S. colleges and universities, over a dozen international universities and a handful of K-12 schools.
